Wildcat Falls article and photos from our Volunteer writer "Jewels:"
Spring. My favorite time of year and as well as the rainiest. Perfect time
to do a first time visit to Wildcat Falls in Merrimack NH. My sidekick Chris
and I ventured out on this rainy afternoon in search of a waterfall. Being
only in NH for the past year I discovered your website and wanted to get out
and see the scenic views the granite state has to offer. So pulling up to
the end of Currier Street in Merrimack, to my surprise I find a dead end
with a small sign labeling this wildcat falls. Not your typical entrance to
a NH trail but labeled enough where you knew you were in the right place. We
get out of the car and start on the trail. In the beginning it is easy and a
single path. As you continue down you will see other trails on your left and
right. We just continued straight. Awkwardly, as you go further down the
path you run into power lines and have to walk underneath them. It made me
think we were on the wrong path. Chris decided it would be best to listen
and see if we could hear running water. As we listened to the woods we could
hear the faint sound of water and decided to continue straight down the
path. As you go further it becomes eminent that you are heading in the right
direction. Soon the sounds of rushing falls and Souhegan River over powers
the area and you see a clearing of rocks embedded so perfectly next to the
falls. Mother Nature seating at its best. We stayed there for a while and
enjoyed the view around us. The photos that we took below are from the ledge
above the falls. The paths after this area got tricky but we explored for a
while and stayed close to the river before we went back to where we started.
This trail was definately worth the visit because of the end result. Just
bring along your explorer spirit and you will appreciate what it has to
offer.
