Boscawen NH is a quiet little town nestled in between Penacook NH and
Franklin NH. It is located in Merrimack County and has a
population of about 4,000.
On
April 22, 1760, Contoocook Plantation was officially named a town by
Governor Wentworth. The town was named after Lord Edward
Boscawen who as a British Admiral involved with the 1758 Siege of
Louisburg.
Boscawen
NH was an abundant town. The town was pretty level so it made for
great farm land and became well known for its apple, pear and cherry
orchards. And because Boscawen NH was surrounded by the
Merrimack
River and Contoocook River, it was the perfect source of water power
for local mills. At the time, industries included a cotton
mill, a wool factory, nine saw mills, a grist mill, a saw maker, a
chair factory and a match factory.
In
1846, the Northern Railroad was built thorough Boscawen. Also
that same year, the local postmaster became the only one of several
in the country to issue postage stamps. The public library was
built in 1915 by Boston architect Guy Lowell.
Now
that you have a brief history of Boscawen New Hampshire, let me tell you some of
the great things this town has to offer.
When
most people hear the word Boscawen, they automatically think of the
New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery. The NH State Veterans
Cemetery is one of 43 state veterans cemeteries and 135 national
veterans cemeteries located throughout the U.S. The 104-acre
cemetery was established in 1997 in the town of Boscawen, NH. The
cemetery provides the final resting place for NH men and women who
