A Note About the 2010 Tall Ships Festival
Not only was the date changed for the 2010 Tall Ships
Festival, but so did the
location and the size of the event. The Tall Ships
Festival is normally held at the Market Street Terminal,
in 2010 it was moved to the Portsmouth Commercial
Fishing Pier on Pierce Island near
Strawbery Banke Museum. The event was smaller,
but claimed to be even more exciting than past years with
the new venue and it's location near the historic
museum.
Nearly 20,000 people
attended that weekend. Many of them came early to view the tall ships that usually
arrive during the week before the actual Tall Ship Festival
weekend.
The Parade of Sail was set for Friday May 28, 2010. The
parade started at buoy 2KR and headed towards the
commercial fishing pier. The best place to view the
Tall Ships Parade is on Newcastle Common, Pierce Island,
Four Tree Island, Prescott Park or on the state pier.
The public can launch their boats and join the parade
with the Tall Ships. The Portsmouth and Navy Yard fire
boats led the parade. The Newmarket Militia fired their welcoming cannon salute with a return fire
from the Tall ships.
The Tall
Ships were not open for tours on Friday.
During the Tall Ships
Festival, the tall
ships docked in
Portsmouth Harbor for
the
festival organized by
the Piscataqua Maritime
Commission. The two
ships that were scheduled to
arrive in Portsmouth
Harbor were:
The HMS Bounty and the
Lynx.
