Harmony Mountain Abode is
located in the pristine village of Twin Mountain and surrounded by
the Presidential Range and Franconia Range of mountains in New
Hampshire’s famous White Mountains.
In the early 1800s early
pioneers ventured out here. In 1832, one family built the house
that is now the Abode. While the colonial house must have supported
a big family, it was in the 1950s, the house became a cottage
providing bed and food to guests visiting the White Mountains.
Major renovations were done to the house at the turn of the new
millennium. Within the framework of the historical house, a bed and
breakfast inn was developed with a European theme of a neat and tidy
farmhouse. In 2007, this house became Harmony Mountain Abode, a bed
and breakfast inn with its European flavor kept while adding an
Asian atmosphere.
The Abode has 7 rooms.
They include two suites: Luzern and Matterhorn, and five units:
Appenzell, Heidi’s, Lake of Geneva, Inter Laken, and Ticino. Each
is equipped with its own bathroom and each carries its own colors
and unique features. Intending to cater to various situations, the
hosts have placed four units/suites with a queen size bed, two units
have a full size bed, while one unit has two extra long twin beds.
The Abode provides high quality individually-bottled shampoo and
hair conditioner, personal-size soap, and plush towels. Each of the
two suites has its own living room and its own kitchenette.
Guests not only have their
own clean and comfortable rooms, but also can relax, read, or
socialize in the public areas at the Abode. The common room has cozy
and comfortable chairs, a library corner, a kitchenette with a
fridge and a sink, cabinets containing coffee/tea and snacks, a tea
table, and a computer desk. Here, guests can enjoy afternoon tea
offered by their hosts. Mount Washington comes into the Abode
through the French doors and the big windows in the common room.

The Abode has a front porch
of 280 square feet (26 square meters). Four huge windows frame
almost an entire wall of the porch. The Franconia Range with Mount
Lafayette as its peak is pictured in the four big windows. These
pictures change colors with the seasons. Guests can sit in the
rocking chairs and admire the natural scenery on the porch. The
front porch is heated in the Winter while it is soaked in natural
sunlight most of the Winter day.
There is a deck of 192
square feet (17.8 square meters) outside the Abode. Sitting on the
lounge chairs under a sun umbrella, you have a 270 degree view of
the surrounding mountains. In the morning, you can watch the sun
rise above Mount Washington. In the fall, amazing colors on the
mountains come into your eyes.
The Abode has a formal
dining room with a wood-burning fireplace. In the dining room, the
hosts serve warm and nutritious breakfast to their guests. While
breakfast mostly features European-American items such as bacon,
omelet, juices, and pancakes. It also contains occasional additions
of Asian items such as scallion pancakes, tea eggs, or stir-fried
noodles. The Abode also offers optional dinner to her guests. The
dinner is cooked and presented in pure, authentic Chinese style.
Guests who have had dinner at the Abode all said that the option for
dinner was wise. One married couple wrote in the guest book that
“our special supper was remarkable - you have spoiled us for
restaurant food.”
The Abode is connected to
the world with wireless internet and through cable TV in all
the rooms.
Situated in such a
privileged location, guests at the Abode have easy access to all the
natural attractions offered by the White Mountains: Skiing at the
nearby Bretton Woods and Canaan Mountain resorts, bicycling on the
specially reserved bicycle route, fishing and swimming in nearby
rivers, lakes, and ponds, visiting wildlife refuges, hiking the
various trails to amazing waterfalls and cascades, going on maple
sugaring or moose watching tours, hunting for antiques, shopping at
outlets, experiencing Christmas wonders, choosing and cutting a
Christmas tree…
The hosts of the Abode are
Americans of Chinese origin. They strive to make the Abode a place
where guests can experience naturally beautiful surroundings,
multi-cultural atmosphere, sincere hospitality, healthy food, and an
overall harmonious environment. Joe, the husband, runs the Abode
and cooks most of the food. He is an engineer by training. Before
they got into the B&B business, their friends, who dined at their
house, all urged Joe to open a restaurant simply because they loved
everything he cooked. Instead of running a restaurant, they got into
the B&B business because Joe is also a creative and handy man and
loves people. He now fixes and maintains the big house with pretty
carpentry and craft work. He writes beautiful calligraphy in
Chinese and English and has made wood carvings of personal names and
plaques of special wishes for friends and guests. Shehong, the wife,
is a history professor teaching at a university in Massachusetts.
She comes to the Abode over weekends, holidays, and her Winter and
Summer vacations to help Joe and to meet their guests.
